Home Remedies for Nasal Congestion

Nasal congestion is when the nose becomes inflamed and stuffy. It is caused by minor illnesses such as flu, sinus infection, and cold. The symptoms of nasal congestion are; having swollen nasal tissue, running/stuffy nose, mucus build-up, and sinus pain. Home remedies can be enough in alleviating nasal congestion, especially if it is brought about by the common cold. But, if the symptoms persist, you should visit a medical doctor as soon as possible.

Below is a list showing how to curb nasal congestion using natural treatments:

1. Use a humidifier or vaporizer
A humidifier is a therapy that keeps the air moist to prevent dryness that irritates several parts of the body. A vaporizer is a device that is used to vaporize substances for inhalation. Both humidifiers and vaporizers add moisture to the air effectively.

2. Take long showers
The person with this condition should take long showers or breath in warm steam from a basin of lukewarm water. This helps to keep the nasal passage warm.

3. Drink a lot of fluids
Drinking a lot of fluids assists in thinning out your mucus, which in turn helps in preventing blocked sinuses.

4. Use nasal saline spray
Ensure you have a nasal saline spray. Saline spray is just like salty water, and using it helps you to keep the nasal passage from getting dry.

5. Try a neti pot
It is also wise to try a Neti pot or a nasal irrigator or even a bulb syringe. Here you need to use distilled water or sterile water, but if you don’t have either of them, do not panic cause you can also use normal tap water only that it should be boiled and cooled so that it can make up an irrigation solution. The next step in this remedy is rinsing the irrigation device after every time of use and allowing it to dry again.

6. Warm towels
All you need is moisture in the nasal passage. Therefore, you should wet your towel (or a soft piece of cloth, say, a handkerchief) with warm water and place it on your face. This activity helps in relieving discomfort and thereby opening your nasal passage.

7. Prop yourself up
You can build up yourself by providing your comfort. This can be achieved by ensuring that you use a couple of pillows to lie on them at night. This will make your head elevated, and it, in turn, makes you breathe more easily.
