There is nothing more pleasant than having a bunch of flowers and houseplants that add a pop of color to your house. Most of them serve as air purifiers and their multi-purpose functionality makes them a must-have. However, if you are looking to adopt a cat, there are a few plants that you might have to get rid of as they can prove to be quite toxic to your pet.

Aloe vera
This beautiful succulent has great benefits for you and your skin; however, it does not help your cat. In fact, it can be poisonous to them as it contains toxins, such as saponins and anthraquinones. If ingested by your cat, these can cause acute vomiting and diarrhea.

Asparagus fern
While it makes for a pretty houseplant, asparagus fern, which belongs to the family of liliaceae, is actually super toxic to cats. Aside from the gastrointestinal effects such as vomiting, abdominal pain, and possible diarrhea, which can occur due to berry consumption, continuous exposure to this plant can cause allergic dermatitis.

Chives
Chives make a great addition to food. Unfortunately, if your pet cat consumes chives, it can lead to severe symptoms such as multiple forms for anemia, bloody urine, a high heart rate, excessive vomiting, and panting.

Chrysanthemum
As pretty as they look in your home garden, it’s advisable to not keep chrysanthemum as they pose a high risk to cats. Apart from the usual vomiting and diarrhea, it also causes dermatitis, incoordination, and hypersalivation.

Devil’s ivy
Devil’s ivy is really quite the devil for your pet cat. The plant contains toxic insoluble calcium oxalates, and if your pet consumes the plant, it will experience and exhibit symptoms such as oral irritation, swelling in the mouth, drooling, vomiting, and more.

Peace lily
Your cat will find absolutely nothing peaceful about this lily as it contains insoluble calcium oxalates that can cause swelling of mouth, tongue, and even lips. The consumption of this plant can make your pet vomit and drool excessively and cause diarrhea.

Oregano
Yes, fresh oregano and flakes are absolutely delicious on pizza but do keep the herb away from your cat as it contains gastrointestinal irritants that can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Ribbon plant
The ribbon plant sure makes your house look fancy, but it is quite dangerous for cats. It contains saponins that can cause bloody vomit, depression, salivation, and dilated pupils.
Hydrangea
This absolutely beautiful and flowery plant can make your cat’s life a living hell as it contains cyanogenic glycoside. The cyanide can intoxicate your pet; however, this is quite rare. Apart from this, the plant can cause gastrointestinal disturbance such as diarrhea and vomiting and, in worse cases, depression.
